EPDM vs. Silicone: Choosing the Right Material for Seals and Gaskets
EPDM and silicone are common seal and gasket materials for both molded and extruded applications.
EPDM: Durable, Cost-Effective Performance
EPDM is popular due to its ability to perform in outdoor uses because it resists weathering, water and aging. It is regarded as a cost-effective material for a variety of industries.
Silicone: Heat and Environmental Resistance
Silicone features excellent resistance to sunlight and oxidation, and it is a good electrical insulator. It also has an excellent compression set and can withstand high heat. However, silicone is not recommended for applications that require abrasion, tear and cut growth resistance or high tensile strength.
Choosing the Right Material for Your Application
Both EPDM and silicone are color stable, have excellent ozone resistance and maintain their flexibility at low temperatures. A notable difference is EPDM's ability to resist alkalis and acids, but neither material is recommended for resistance to oil or gasoline.
To determine if EPDM or silicone is right for your application, the end-use function and physical, mechanical and chemical resistance requirements must be considered. Cooper Standard Industrial and Specialty Group engineers will work with you to review these decisions.
