Custom Colors For Seals And Gaskets

Custom Colors For Seals And Gaskets

If you need to specify a color for silicone, EPDM or other seal and gasket material, there are important factors you should first consider.

While it is typically more cost effective to choose from existing colored compounds, Cooper Standard's research and development team can work with you for projects that require a custom solution.

Key Considerations

Knowing the end-use conditions of your application will help us deliver a product that meets your expectations.

Here are questions to answer as you consider a colored rubber extrusion:

  • Will the application require pigments or additives that mitigate the effects of UV exposure?
  • Will the part be in contact with other materials, such as sealants, that may cause leaching?
  • Will the part be exposed to chemicals, such as cleaning agents, that can cause discoloration?
  • Are there FDA or environmental compliance requirements that may prohibit the use of certain types of pigments?
  • What is the expected part life?

Material Differences

When it comes to custom colors, the two most common rubber materials we work with are silicone and EPDM.

Of these, silicone better lends itself to vibrant colors and greater consistency. The silicone base material is semi-clear and does not require certain additives, such as carbon black, that inhibit colorization.

When silicone’s performance or color properties are not required, EPDM may be a more cost-effective option.

Even though it is more challenging to generate bright or vivid tones with EPDM, it is still possible to achieve a wide range of colors that satisfy the requirements of many applications.

In either case, adding a coating to the part can help produce a desired surface finish.
