Material options for HVAC Gaskets

Selection of the right material is critical to developing effective access door gaskets, damper blade seals, gasket tape, vibration dampeners and other solutions for HVAC applications.

This requires an understanding of a material’s physical, mechanical and chemical resistance properties as well as industrial specifications, such as UL, ASTM, SAE, FDA, NSF International and U.S. Military Standards.

While Cooper Standard ISG offers a wide-range of both rubber and plastics, the following materials are commonly used in HVAC seal and gasket applications. Here’s a quick look at the strengths of each:

EPDM

  • Excellent for outdoor use
  • Ozone, weathering and aging resistance
  • Water and steam resistance
  • Flexible at low temperatures
  • Resistant to alkalis, acids & oxygenated solvents
  • Color stable

Silicone

  • Outstanding resistance to high heat
  • Resistance to ozone, sunlight and oxidation
  • Color stable
  • Flexible at low temperatures
  • Low compression set
  • Good electrical insulator

TPV

  • Flame and ozone resistance
  • Excellent flex fatigue properties
  • Good performance in alcohol
